Therapy duration can vary widely among individuals, but a rough estimate is anywhere from six months to several years with weekly sessions. We understand that this may seem like a significant commitment. In a world where instant gratification is often expected, therapy stands out for its slower, more deliberate approach.
At Analog Counseling, we emphasize the importance of this journey. True transformation is a process that demands time and effort. We believe in the value of therapy, which is why we engage in our own therapeutic work. If you are intrigued by the idea of embarking on this path with us, we invite you to reach out for a complimentary initial phone consultation to discuss this further.
-
A credit card is required to be put on file. Most people pay with the card on file (you don’t have to do anything, it gets run by Analog after your session). However, cash and check are also accepted. Many people have used HSA’s with us as well and we have not ever heard of there being a problem with that. Anything in accordance with your insurance though needs to be checked by your with your insurance.

Psychotherapy is a structured conversation with a trained clinician that helps you understand the patterns in your thoughts, feelings, and behavior. At Analog Counseling, we offer psychotherapy for adults, couples, teens, and families in Overland Park, Kansas, and across the Kansas City metro by telehealth. Sessions typically last 50 minutes, and most people meet weekly.
-
Psychoanalysis is a depth-oriented form of therapy that explores how unconscious patterns, early relationships, and internal conflicts shape current life. It usually involves more frequent sessions than weekly therapy. Aaron Mitchum is a trained psychoanalyst and offers this work in Overland Park and by telehealth.
-
Somatic Experiencing, often called SE, is a body-based approach to trauma recovery developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine. It tracks sensations, movement, and nervous system responses rather than focusing only on talk. The work helps complete fight, flight, or freeze responses that became stuck during a traumatic event. Aaron Mitchum and Michael Wieberg are both Somatic Experiencing Practitioners (SEPs).
-
EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. It is an evidence-based therapy that uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, tapping, or sound, to help the brain process traumatic memories and reduce their emotional charge. EMDR is recognized by the American Psychological Association as an effective treatment for PTSD.
-
EMDR is used for trauma and PTSD, anxiety, depression, panic, phobias, grief, and complicated life transitions. People often see meaningful change in fewer sessions than with traditional talk therapy alone.
-
While number of sessions is impossible to gurantee, most people see significant change in eight to twenty sessions, depending on the complexity of what they are working on. Single-event traumas often resolve faster than long-running or developmental traumas. Your therapist will discuss a treatment plan with you in the first few sessions.
-
Yes. EMDR can be done effectively through video sessions using on-screen visual movement, audio tones, or self-tapping. We offer EMDR telehealth sessions to clients across Kansas and Missouri.
-
Psychodynamic couples counseling looks at the patterns underneath repeated conflicts. Instead of teaching communication skills as a quick fix, the work focuses on each partner’s history, attachment style, and sense of self. This approach is well suited to couples who have tried surface-level conflict tools and still feel stuck.
-
Yes. We offer marriage and couples counseling at our Overland Park, Kansas office and by telehealth across the Kansas City metro. Sessions are 50 to 75 minutes and run weekly to start. Couples counseling is offered by Aaron Mitchum, Ryan Speed and Casey Kapple.
-
Yes. Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people start therapy. We work with anxiety using a combination of psychotherapy, somatic approaches, and EMDR depending on what is driving it. Some people need brief, focused work; others benefit from longer-term therapy that addresses underlying patterns.
-
Yes. Depression often responds well to psychotherapy, especially when the work addresses the relational and developmental roots, not just the symptoms. We offer therapy for depression in Overland Park and by telehealth in Kansas and Missouri.
-
Yes. Both Somatic Experiencing and EMDR are well-supported approaches for trauma and PTSD. We treat single-incident trauma (accidents, assaults, medical events) and developmental or complex trauma (chronic stress, childhood neglect, attachment wounds).
-
Talk therapy works primarily through language and insight. Somatic therapy adds attention to the body, including sensations, breath, posture, and nervous system regulation. Many trauma symptoms live in the body and respond more directly to somatic work than to talk alone. We integrate both at Analog Counseling.

The first session is an intake. Your therapist will ask about what brings you in, your background, and what you hope to get out of therapy. You will have time to ask questions about how the therapist works and what to expect from treatment. The first session usually does not jump into deep clinical work; it is for orientation and fit.

There is no formal threshold. Some signs people use: persistent low mood, anxiety that interferes with life, a recent loss or transition, recurring relationship problems, or a sense that you cannot make a change you want to make.
