Somatic Experiencing Therapy in Kansas City

Body-based trauma therapy at our Overland Park office and by telehealth

What is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic approach to trauma developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine. It works with the body’s nervous system rather than focusing only on talk. SE practitioners track sensations, movement, breath, and emotion to help the body complete the protective responses (fight, flight, or freeze) that got interrupted during a traumatic event.

When Somatic Experiencing helps

SE is used for single-event trauma (car accidents, assaults, medical events, falls), developmental trauma (chronic childhood stress, neglect, attachment wounds), chronic anxiety with a strong body component, panic, and chronic pain conditions where stress is a factor. People often come to SE after talk therapy has helped intellectually but symptoms remain in the body.

What a Somatic Experiencing session looks like

Sessions are mostly conversation, with periodic check-ins about what you notice in your body. Your practitioner may invite you to track a sensation, follow a small impulse to move, or notice your breath. The work is gentle and titrated. We do not push into overwhelming material.

Practitioners

Aaron Mitchum and Michael Wieberg are both certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioners (SEPs).
