Trauma Therapy in Kansas City
Body-based and evidence-based trauma treatment in Overland Park
What trauma therapy is
Trauma therapy is treatment for people whose nervous systems are stuck reacting to past events. Trauma is not always a single dramatic moment. Long-running stress, childhood neglect, medical events, relationship harm, and accidents can all leave the nervous system in a chronic fight, flight, or freeze pattern. Trauma therapy helps complete those responses and restore a sense of safety in the body.
Types of trauma we treat
We work with single-incident trauma (car accidents, assaults, medical events, falls), developmental trauma (childhood neglect, attachment wounds, chronic stress), complex PTSD, grief and loss, traumatic birth, and the slower kinds of trauma that show up as anxiety, depression, chronic pain, or emotional flooding rather than flashbacks.
How we treat trauma at Analog Counseling
Our team integrates three approaches that research and clinical experience both support for trauma work: Somatic Experiencing (SE), a body-based approach that helps the nervous system complete fight, flight, or freeze responses; EMDR, an evidence-based therapy that uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain process traumatic memories; and psychodynamic psychotherapy, which addresses how trauma has shaped attachment, identity, and relationships. Most clients benefit from a combination tailored to what they are working with and how their nervous system responds.
What a trauma therapy session looks like
Sessions are mostly conversation. We pace the work to your nervous system rather than pushing toward overwhelming material. You and your therapist may track sensations, work with a specific memory using EMDR, or explore patterns in your relationships and history. The focus is on restoring regulation and choice, not on rehashing pain.
Locations and telehealth
Trauma therapy is available at our Overland Park office and by telehealth across Kansas and Missouri. Both EMDR and Somatic Experiencing work well remotely.
Practitioners
Aaron Mitchum (psychoanalyst, SEP) and Michael Wieberg (LSCSW, SEP) lead the trauma work at Analog Counseling. Other clinicians on our team also work with trauma.
